2025 Week of Remembrance & National Wildland Firefighter Day

June 30 – July 6 – Honoring the Fallen
As events unfolded in Idaho last Sunday, our hearts broke.  There is no way to have a safe, effective, risk based response to wildfire, when harm to firefighters is intended from the outset.  Words fall short in moments like these.

For the past decade, this week has paid tribute to wildland firefighters who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to the fire profession.  Started in 2014, it spans the week of the Yarnell Hill (2013) and South Canyon (1994) tragedies.

The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) has a 2025 Letter to Leadership we’d encourage you to read.  There are also links to specific incidents from 2015 that offer valuable lessons and questions to ponder for the wildland fire service.  Please click below to learn more.

We’d also like to remind you that tomorrow is National Wildland Firefighter Day.
July 2, 2025, will mark the fourth annual National Wildland Firefighter Day. Established in 2022, National Wildland Firefighter Day is an opportunity to honor wildland firefighters and fire support personnel, whose contributions to public safety and the safeguarding of natural resources are often unseen by the public.

July 2 was chosen because it falls during the annual Week of Remembrance (June 30-July 6), when wildland firefighters review the lessons of fatality fires. Within that somber context, the national day is an important opportunity to appreciate those that continue to risk so much in the line of duty. It’s also when the busiest part of the fire year is typically ramping up, and wildland fire is front-of-mind for the American public.
